William Wymark Jacobs was an English novelist and short story writer, who left outstanding works mainly in the genres of humor and horror. He was born on Sept. 8, 1863 in London and spent his childhood near the Thames, an experience which greatly influenced his marine novels later on.
Initially, Jacobs wrote humorous short stories, mostly set in the sea, and his signature collections of works, such as "Many Cargoes" 1896 and "Sea Urchins" 1898, were very popular at the time. He was loved by readers for his witty writing style, depicting realistically a sailor, a port worker, and various characters on board a ship.
Today, however, Jacobs' most widely known work is The Monkey's Paw, a horror short published in 1902. It has become a classic of horror literature, about a family who gets three wishes and a mysterious monkey's hand meets an unexpected and terrible result.
